    Zeno’s Paradox

Our love is constantly in motion
But it never seems to be moving anywhere
When I see the space between us
    I divide it infinitely
    But I’m a finite man I can’t travel across
    an infinity of subdivisible points

I realize that it’s only a philosophical problem
But I’ve made it manifest in my heart

Every day I move a little bit closer
Waiting for you to call me to come over
I show you what I am by what I’m not
It’s in the logic that I get caught
Our lives are ruled by Zeno’s paradox

I define myself as moving closer to you
But at a given snapshot in space and time, I am motionless
But you can see me coming, though at each fixed point I’m still
Somehow I’m logically disproving the possibly of motion

And this may only be a philosophical problem
But it’s what I’m feeling here in my heart

Every day I move a little bit closer
Waiting for you to call me to come over
I show you what I am by what I’m not
It’s in the logic that I get caught
Our lives are ruled by Zeno’s paradox

    Before I get to you
I need to get halfway there
    But before I’m halfway there,
I need to get a quarter way there
Before I’m a quarter way there
I need to get a eighth way there
And so it goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on…

And this may only be a philosophical problem
But it’s what I’m feeling here in my heart

Every day I move a little bit closer
Waiting for you to call me to come over
I show you what I am by what I’m not
It’s in the logic that I get caught
Our lives are ruled by Zeno’s paradox

    Cadence

    Looking at each other
    Like we know each other
    Knowing the part each other
    Wants to blame
    Setting fire to the
    Parts of us that were
    On fire and are
    Now inflamed

    Focus deeply on
the cadence of the way you tell me
That our walls are coming down
    Deeper rhythms guide the
    Spaces in between the times
We swim and when we drown

    Endless hours spent in
    Endless conversations
Knowing how this all would end
Raise a glass to all the
    Walls we raised and shattered
Walls we’ll build and raze again

    Focus deeply on
the cadence of the way you tell me
That our walls are coming down
    Deeper rhythms guide the
    Spaces in between the times
We swim and when we drown

I never figured out just what it was I wanted
When we started out together on this ride
And after all this time the only thing I’m hoping
Is together that we’ll make it out alive

    The clock is striking midnight
    The hour’s close at hand
And that’s all you’ll get from me

    Focus deeply on
the cadence of the way you tell me
That our walls are coming down
    Deeper rhythms guide the
    Spaces in between the times
We swim and when we drown

    Bridges

Inside of these poses lies a truth
Rivers carved out in our youth
    You can’t see them anymore
I know what to look for

    Bridges between now and then
Lead us between why and when
    The bridges they burn

Stand on the shoreline, watch you drown
    A Raven Ophelia sinking down
Holding your gaze as it goes dim
Both of us knowing you can swim

    Bridges between now and then
Lead us between why and when
    The bridges they burn
    The bridges they burn
    The bridges they burn

    Stain

Fourteen hours and maybe six years ago
    I overthrew the truth
You saw me coming, you encouraged the flow
    Together we moved so smooth

Not now, there’s nothing but friction
These days I have other addictions

You may have figured out by now that I’m broken
And I walked away but you remained
And I think of you when I think about the mess that I’ve become
I spilled the wine but you wear the stain

Severed lipstick, painted runes on my guitar
Among the signs that you were here
Empty seat beside me at an empty bar
Close my eyes and I disappear

Another day, another year, I don’t count anymore
Wondering if it was you that I was looking for

You may have figured out by now that I’m broken
And I walked away but you remained
And I think of you when I think about the mess that I’ve become
I spilled the wine but you wear the stain

Other lights are circling around your star
I’ve stopped thinking I’ll ever know who you are

You may have figured out by now that I’m broken
And I walked away but you remained
And I think of you when I think about the mess that I’ve become
I spilled the wine but you
I spilled the wine but you
I spilled the wine but you wear the stain

    Tapestry

All of the colors and all the shapes
Swirl in a tempest around me
Fillings in edges, escaping through cracks
    Making another inquiry

    Opening windows
    Wrapping round lives
    Spiraling into a shape

    It’s only through your eyes
I see the rich tapestry woven inside
Out to the corners and all through this life
    Reflecting itself in your eyes

    Deepening focus, enhancing the lines
    Spreading out over the boundaries
Touching the meanings, revealing the truths
    Affecting the rhythms profoundly

    Sit on the doorstep
    Awaiting the time
    Uprooting all of the fear

    It’s only through your eyes
I see the rich tapestry woven inside
Out to the corners and all through this life
    Reflecting itself in your eyes

Exploring the margins, undoing the seams
    Unraveling all that’s behind

    Trapped in the open
    Expanding the cage
    Delivering all that was asked

    It’s only through your eyes
I see the rich tapestry woven inside
Out to the corners and all through this life
    Reflecting itself in your eyes

    Coast of Nebraska

We’ll go swimming off the coast of Nebraska
We’ll make love in the snowy Philippines
We’ll eat dinner atop mountains on Atlantis
You’ll love the authentic Atlantean cuisine

I only want to take you places we can never go
I only want to be seen with you by people we can never know
Our love is impossible, it just can’t exist
But while we’re here, let’s forget about that, just look out the window
    and let’s enjoy the scenery

Let’s go dancing on the surface of Mars
    Catch a movie in Brigadoon
Here, my dear, and nowhere else, my love for you is true
I’ll shout it from the Dark Side of the Moon

I only want to take you places we can never go
I only want to be seen with you by people we can never know
Our love is impossible, it just can’t exist
But while we’re here, let’s forget about that, and let me you why

    Somewhere, somehow
    Anytime but now
    We’re on vacation from reality
I think I wanna go home

We’ll sip cocktails on the Great Wall of China
    Re-enact Waterloo
And we’ll keep grasping at whatever’s left to grab on
And keep faking our “I love you”s

I only wanted to take you places we could never go
I only wanted to be seen with you by people we could never know
Our love was impossible, it just couldn’t exist
But it was beautiful and magical and a nightmare of color and light

We went swimming off the coast of Nebraska
We made love in the snowy Philippines

    Plural of Me

Visions of her spread out across the pale morning sky filled with
Colorful tapestries ripe with all that I could capture
As we sat alone on the edges of oceans
just hoping that nothing was real

There’s more to the both of us than we ever let the other see in the light of day

She was the plural of me and I made her go into her own private world
Without her I’m rooted here, Blissfully free
    Of what I’ll never know

My hairs have been graying, my vision is failing but some things I’ll never unsee
Not things I that treasure or things that I cling to, but things that define all that I’ll never be

Secrets and lies and the failings I leave in my wake as I float through the waves

She was the plural of me and I made her go into her own private world
Without her I’m rooted here, Blissfully free
    Of what I’ll never know

Imagining her life as she makes her way though the world living all of the
Dreams that I had for her while I stand wondering if I had done something to save her from herself that those dreams would blossom into
a life it seems that I’ll never see

She was the plural of me and I made her go into her own private world
Without her I’m rooted here, Blissfully free
    Of what I’ll never know
    Of what I’ll never know
    Of what I’ll never know

    The Revisionist

    Leading, Sculpting, Opening Wide
    Chalk Line Drawings always lied
    Revelatory, Marrow deep
    Mandatory, Secrets keep

I never believed a word you said
I never believed a word you said

    Exercises, Reality
    Shady Prizes, Mortality
    Execution, Falling Down
    Evolution, Run aground

I never believed a word you said
And now you tell me that

I am the one who will learn to tell the story
I am the one who will own the story

I never believed a word you said
And now you tell me that

I am the one who will learn to tell the story
I am the one who will own the story

    Deep convictions, Solitude
    Creating fictions, Fate renewed

    Tired

Alarm goes off at 6 o’clock and I just lie in bed
Shut my eyes and push this hangover out of my head
Kids will miss the bus unless I kick them out the door
Why is everything in life just such a fucking chore?

Moldy food and unpaid bills are piled on table
TV’s blasting static, looks like they cut off the cable
Water heater’s broken, looks like I won’t get a shower
How can anybody function at this motherfucking hour?

Chug my coffee, start my car, and pray that it will drive
Once the caffeine kicks in, it reminds me I’m alive, but

Oh my god I tell you I’m so fucking tired
I’m so fucking tired, I’m so fucking tired
    I know I’m whining but
Oh my god I tell you I’m so fucking tired
And Jesus Christ it’s only Monday

Accident on the interstate and I’m running out of gas
Some dickhead bastard cuts me off, he can kiss my fucking ass
Punch the clock at 8:15 for a job I don’t understand
Life is pretty shitty when you’re working for the man

I’m broke, my wife left, I’m getting fat, l guess I’m pretty numb
These are first world problems, I know everybody’s got some and

Oh my god I tell you I’m so fucking tired
I’m so fucking tired, I’m so fucking tired
    I know I’m whining but
Oh my god I tell you I’m so fucking tired
And Jesus Christ it’s only Monday

40 years of experience and all that I can say
Is whatever life can give you, it can take it all away
Life beats the shit out of you
    Sing it with me now
Life beats the shit out of you…   guitar!

Clock out, drive home to the bar, the place where I fit in
My misery gets easier with every slug of gin
I make it home, blackout drunk, sit in my bed and cry
My alarm goes off at 6 and I wish I would fucking die

Somehow I’ll get my ass up and do like I’m fucking told
Fighting back is futile and I feel so fucking old
Oh my god I tell you I’m so fucking tired
I’m so fucking tired, I’m so fucking tired
    I know I’m whining but
Oh my god I tell you I’m so fucking tired
    And Jesus Christ it’s only
    Yeah Jesus Christ it’s only
    Jesus Christ it’s only Monday

Let’s Burn the White House Down

Sometimes I feel like overthrowing the government
Not for any reason other than disturbing the status quo

Let’s burn the White House down
Let’s burn the White House down
I don’t really care just who is living there
Let’s burn the White House down

Every generation needs its own revolution
And frankly ours is long overdue

Let’s burn the White House down
Let’s burn the White House down
I don’t really care just who is living there
Let’s burn the White House down

Dismantle the crypto-fascist military industrial complex
The American Experiment has failed for the last time

Let’s burn the White House down
Let’s burn the White House down
I don’t really care just who is living there
Let’s burn the White House down

    I don’t have an alternative
I don’t know how to run a country
All I know is how to destroy
And that may be enough for me

Let’s burn the White House down
Let’s burn the White House down
I don’t really care just who is living there
Let’s burn the White House down

    Let’s tear down the patriarchy
Feed the rich to the dogs

Let’s burn the White House down
Let’s burn the White House down
I don’t really care just who is living there
Let’s burn the White House down
Let’s burn the White House down

Let’s burn the White House down
